Antonio Lucio Vivaldi is one of the greatest and most influential Baroque composers. He lived a very rich and eventful life, and composed many beautiful and classic musical works.
He was born in Venice, Italy in 1680. His father was a musician and his mother was a painter. After completing his studies at the Accademia della Musica in Venice, Vivaldi began to study music theory and composition with a great master, Giovanni Battista Pergola.
In 1687, Vivaldi was appointed court musicus and cantorni (chamber music and horn player) in Bergamo. From 1688 to 1707, he studied composition with Pietro Domenichelli, a famous bassist, and from 1708 to 1711, he was court musicus in Salzburg. In 1712, he became first court musicus and cantorni in Vienna.
Vivaldi had a very strong musical talent and an excellent musical knowledge. He composed many beautiful and classic musical works, including opera, symphony, concerto, and ballet. His greatest work is a series of violin concertos called The Four Seasons.
Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna.
